"Here They!"

Finally, a Texas university, one of the most expensive, is one of the colleges leading the way in removing the word that is probably the "gateway" word to all offensiveness - freshman/freshmen. This remnant of the evil past has survived the women's lib movement that lasted from the 60's into the 80's. Do you remember that period of time when men were standing in protest with signs that said, "Give Women Equality But Do Not Take The Word Freshman From Us"? Women even got calloused to the word and called themselves freshman in their first year of college. Think of all the times you have walked onto campus on that first day of college and saw women wailing because they were being called freshmen and were even more upset because they were calling themselves that. In campuses full of people young ladies felt alone and excluded because they were being forced into calling themselves a freshMAN, or collectively calling themselves MEN. Do you remember all of this? Of course, you don't because it has never happened and has never been thought of until now. Why is this a deal now? It is not because women do not feel included, it is because people who are confused about their gender must be catered to. Any reference of any gender must be removed. What is amazing is that people in leadership positions had conversations about this subject. In colleges where people are paying small fortunes to send their adult children to get an education and alumni are donating millions of dollars in order to advance education, there is a conversation in a boardroom taking place about what to do with the word freshman. It has been difficult for me to get used to these changes. The other day I caught myself in the yard hollering "Here Girl!" to my dog, but do not fret, I immediately corrected myself and started hollering "Here They!". That was an absolutely amazing experience because, for the first time ever, as Molly came running up to me, she had a look of freedom on her little dog face; I had finally released her from the bondage that all dogs are burdened with, the bondage of biological gender identification.
